"Das Bergische Städtedreieck" - The Bergisch city triangle – at the heart of the matter with tradition and innovation

The three cities of Remscheid, Solingen and Wuppertal confidently present themselves as a region of entrepreneurs, often referred to as the Bergisch city triangle, between the banks of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. Centrally located in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, the cities can look back on a long tradition as a strong economic location. According to history, the industrial revolution had its roots here before spreading throughout the European mainland. With more than 600,000 residents in an area of more than 332 km², the Bergisch city triangle is the smallest region in the NRW regional family.
The Bergisch Development Agency (BEA) is the interface and driving force for regional collaboration. Since 2007 it has taken on the role of a regional development organisation for structural policy in the area. The region is solely responsible for financing the BEA. The stakeholders in the agency are the cities of Remscheid, Solingen and Wuppertal, the region’s three city savings banks, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid as well as the Wuppertal Economic Development Agency, Wirtschaftsförderung Wuppertal AöR. The activities of the BEA mainly concentrate on initiating, monitoring, supporting and implementing regionally significant projects in the areas of economic development, regional development and the promotion of tourism in the region. The core interest elements are network management, the facilitation and professional accompaniment of inter-community coordination processes, concept development and acquiring financial subsidies. Furthermore, it is the central point of contact for the implementation of NRW structural policy in the Bergisch city triangle and therefore views itself as a cooperation partner for the state government.

The BEA combines the collective commitment of the parties involved to implement an individual, active contribution to combat the negative effects of structural changes, as well as jointly concentrating on ensuring the future economic, financial, social and urban planning capabilities of the Bergisch city triangle.
The Bergisch city triangle region collaborates intensively and successfully in the fields of renewable energy, climate protection and climate adaptation. The Bergisch Development Agency (BEA), for example, founded the hundertprozentig.ERNEUERBAR network ("one hundred per cent RENEWABLE") in 2011 together with the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy GmbH, the University of Wuppertal, the Wupperverband association, the EnergyAgency.NRW, the regional district craft guilds, the Working Group for Renewable Energy in the Bergisches Land region and the Bergische Gesellschaft für Ressourceneffizienz (Bergisch Society for Resource Efficiency); the network, among other things, has already organised and held two large inter-regional conferences on the transformation of the energy system.
